Emily Harold '07 Annual Scholarship

Creating a Scholarship for pre-vet and biology students to Pay it forward

Emily Harold ‘07 knew she wanted to attend St. Ambrose University after visiting her sister several times on campus. She also wanted a college close to home and SAU was the perfect distance from her hometown of Dubuque, IA. Emily graduated from St. Ambrose in 2007 with a degree in Computer Science, a minor in biology/chemistry and she created her own pre-veterinary program.

Emily was fortunate to graduate from SAU with no loans, thanks to the help of receiving the Presidential Scholarship. This scholarship covered all of her tuition.

"Receiving this scholarship changed the course of everything financially for me," said Emily. "I was able to save money, which helped me buy my first house and attend Veterinary School at Iowa State. I was able to come out of vet school with lower cost and was able to pay off my graduate school loans more quickly."

As a result of this, Emily wanted to give back to the university that set her up for such great success. She spoke with Sally Crino about setting up a scholarship for other pre-vet or biology students to help them reach their goals. Emily wanted to focus on pre-vet students, because she knew there were typically a smaller number of students in that program. "I know this could really benefit these students."

In May of 2021 Emily worked with Sally to set up the Emily Meyer Harold '07 Annual Pre-Veterinarian/Biology Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded to one student annually. Emily said, "My hope is to grow the scholarship so it can be awarded to an additional new student each year.

Emily's advice to other young donors, is "every little bit counts. Giving towards scholarships is a way to make a big impact for students."
