Why should I live on campus?

A student gestures towards her decorated desk in her SAU student housing.

College isn’t just about attending classes and getting your degree. It’s about discovering who you are – expanding on current interests and finding new ones, developing leadership skills that you’ll carry with you for a lifetime, and making friends who will endure life’s ups and downs with you long after you turn that tassel. These experiences are forged by joining clubs, late-night study sessions with classmates, and through Fighting Bee gamedays and campus events. Living on campus puts you at the center of all those experiences.

At St. Ambrose University, students quickly discover that campus housing isn’t just a place to sleep. It’s a place where college comes to life. Here are six reasons why living on campus can help you make the most of your St. Ambrose experience.

1. You'll be part of a vibrant campus community

One of the best parts of living on campus is being surrounded by opportunities to get involved. Whether you're attending a Campus Activities Board (CAB) event, stopping by the Beehive, participating in Homecoming activities, supporting the Fighting Bees, or joining one of more than 70 student organizations, there is always something happening at St. Ambrose.

When you live on campus, you don't have to decide whether an event is worth the drive. You're already there. Some of the most formative college experiences happen because students decide to attend an event and try something new.

2. You'll find your hive

At St. Ambrose, students are encouraged to "find your hive", the people and communities that help them feel supported, connected, and at home. For many students, that journey begins in student housing

You might meet your future roommate, study partner, teammate, or lifelong friend while hanging out in a lounge, attending a floor event, or simply keeping your door open during your first few weeks on campus. Those everyday interactions often become some of the most meaningful parts of your college experience.

3. Everything you need is close

Living on campus means your classes, the librarydining facilitiesfitness center, and student support services are all within walking distance. Need to meet with a professor before class? Grab lunch between lectures? Join friends for a study session in the library? It's all just minutes away.

Instead of spending time commuting, searching for parking, or planning your day around travel, you can spend more time focusing on academics and building relationships.

4. You'll have more time to grow as a leader

College is about discovering who you are and who you want to become.

Living on campus makes it easier to participate in leadership opportunities through student organizations, service projects, residence life programming, athletics, performing arts, and campus events. The more connected you are to campus, the more opportunities you'll have to develop skills that employers and graduate schools value.

5. You'll have support when you need it

Adjusting to college comes with challenges, but living on campus means you're never far from people who want to help you succeed.

Resident assistants (RA), residence life staff, counselors, academic support professionals, faculty and staff, and fellow students all contribute to a supportive campus environment. Whether you need help navigating your first semester or just need advice from someone who's been in your shoes, support is always nearby.

6. Your housing can grow with you

One unique aspect of St. Ambrose is that many students choose to remain on campus throughout their college careers. First-year students often begin in traditional residence halls, but as they progress through college, many move into university-owned townhouses or apartment-style housing that offer additional independence while still keeping them connected to campus life.

That means students can continue enjoying the benefits of living on campus while gaining more responsibility and flexibility as they move toward graduation.

Make the most of every moment

The college experience is about more than earning a degree. It's about finding your community and creating memories you'll carry with you for years to come. Living on campus helps you take advantage of everything St. Ambrose University has to offer and puts you in the perfect position to make every moment count.
