The Morrissey Gallery is named in honor of the Morrissey family, longtime supporters of St. Ambrose University.

Art by Angela Wilson

Angela Wilson: 1000 Sleeping Horses

08/21/2023 - 09/06/2023

These are experimental ink drawings inspired by duality: light and dark,
condensed vs. empty space, and the mundane vs. the extraordinary. There are experiments with hierarchy, sometimes nonlinear time, and unedited mark making. Even the paper's fragility within this process is considered as it references impermanence of a permanent mark.

The images are portraits of family members caught unaware of my gaze, and sometimes imaginings of the supernatural, other times nonsense conjured through streams of consciousness. These are personal icons made tangible through drawing, and installed to create a kind of altarpiece. For me this is a way of paying tribute, in a diaristic way... chronicling the love and wonder present in mundane moments.

Formally, I love to make use of both positive and negative space...experimenting with when to use clarity or detail vs. emptiness or obscurity. The medium of ink adds the additional challenge of one opportunity to make a "perfect" mark without the ability to erase, or paint over. For this reason, the process feels "live" as nothing can be edited. In this way, the drawings are, even more so, recordings of unfiltered moments in time.
