St. Ambrose University has recognized Steven McConnell, area coordinator for the upper-class experience, with the 2025 President’s Award for Staff Excellence. The award honors staff whose leadership, service, and quiet dedication embody the values of the university and leave a lasting impact on students and colleagues alike.
When presenting the award, Amy Novak, EdD, president of St. Ambrose University, described McConnell as someone who “may not always be in the spotlight, but whose impact radiates through every student they support and every colleague they uplift.” Whether responding to a student crisis or mentoring a new resident advisor, McConnell leads with conviction, empathy, and integrity.
She praised McConnell’s calm, courageous approach to challenge, saying, “When unexpected challenges arise – whether in the form of a student crisis, a late-night call, or an unfolding emergency – he responds swiftly and calmly, providing structure, safety, and reassurance. His presence in moments of uncertainty models exactly the kind of grounded leadership our students and staff need.”
McConnell’s work in Residence Life is marked by a deep commitment to student development. Resident assistants consistently describe him as an “extraordinary mentor” who encourages growth, challenges thoughtfully, and helps others recognize their own potential. His leadership is both strategic and personal, grounded in authentic relationships and fueled by a “can-do” attitude that uplifts his entire team.
