Robyn Kincaide SAU's Latest Fulbright

07/01/2016

Fulbright Scholar Robyn Kincaide graduated in May, summa cum laude, with a degree in international studies and political science.

But back in April, Kincaide had not heard back about her Fulbright application—and was feeling a bit uncertain.

"All of my friends started getting jobs and internships and I was waiting," said Kincaide.

A busy student by anyone's standards, Kincaide worked in Student Affairs her entire four years at SAU (moving to the Career Center after her first year); was a peer mentor in her junior year; and did "a lot" of one-on-one and small-group tutoring. All while pursuing a double major. A semester of study abroad whetted the small-town Iowan's appetite for more travel and international exploration.

It was her advisor, Duk Kim, PhD, who interested Kincaide in pursuing a Fulbright Scholarship in South Korea, his country of origin. And it was Fulbright Advisor Barbara Pitz, PhD, who helped Kincaide with her application.

So all the pieces have fallen into place and Kincaide, the ninth SAU Fulbright Scholar in the past 12 years, has arrived in South Korea to teach English at the high-school level. "I'll be shoved out of my comfort zone," said Kincaide in a pre-departure interview. But she also looks forward to her Fulbright year with a sense of adventure and excitement, a year in "the outside world."
