Bachelor of Music Education (BME)

What is a Music Education degree?

Our BME program focuses on developing your musical proficiency, pedagogical skills, and leadership abilities to prepare you for successful careers as music educators in K-12 schools. You will develop advanced skills and knowledge in your primary instrument(s) and voice, as well as proficiency in music theory, ear training, sight-reading, and ensemble performance. In our program you’ll study a wide range of musical styles and genres, gaining an understanding of the history and theory of music.

Why earn a Bachelor of Music Education?

Our program provides experiential learning through fieldwork and practicum opportunities. You’ll develop instructional strategies, curriculum development, assessment techniques, and classroom management strategies tailored to the needs of learners. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to work with faculty ensemble directors conducting public performances.

Hands-on learning

You’ll experience hands-on learning through 100+ hours of field experience and 1 semester of student teaching.

Path to licensure

Students who successfully complete our BME program will be recommended for a license to teach in Iowa agencies and schools.

Lead a marching arts program

We have a marching arts program. As a music education student, you can be involved in the leadership of these programs.

What you’ll learn in your Music Education program

You’ll start by taking foundational courses in education. Then, you’ll lean into your music focus. When you're done, you'll be prepared to become a fully licensed teacher in the states of Iowa and Illinois.

  • Mastery of chosen instrument or voice
  • Mastery of conducting
  • Ability to integrate music technology into teaching
  • Mastery of techniques for accommodating diverse learners
  • Understanding of professional teaching standards

Explore Music Education courses

  • This degree will require you to complete a total of 132 credits, including 45 gen ed credits, 41-43 credits in Music Education, 37-38 core Education credits, and 6-9 elective credits.
  • You will also complete 140 hours of pre-student teaching field experiences at two different age levels, 1 semester of student teaching, and 1 senior recital.
