Jason Senjem

Dr. Jason C. Senjem has taught for more than two decades including full time at Syracuse University and St. Norbert College before joining St. Ambrose. He has been involved in consulting for non-profits and small business and has worked with several local municipal initiatives on economic development and sustainability including the Hilltop Campus Village in Davenport. He teaches workshops for the St. Ambrose University Professional Development Center. Prior to his career in academia, he worked for Mayo Clinic in Admissions and Information Technology. His research is concerned with how organizations use innovative work practices to create economic, social, and environmental value.

Dr. Senjem is published in Journal of Social Entrepreneurship, Group and Organization Management, Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research, and SAGE and Edward Elgar books. He presents papers at the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, British Academy of Management, and Babson-Kaufman Entrepreneurship conferences. He has presented in London, Berlin, Sweden, and Switzerland and taught the Made in Italy study abroad program in Milan, Italy. Dr. Senjem is advisor for Bee Nourished food pantry and Bee Entrepreneurs Club and is a member of the Academy of Management, American Psychological Association, and Society for Human Resource Management.

Courses Taught

  • Principles of Management
    • Survey of topics from several social science disciplines applied to the study of effective management and organizational strategy, structure and behavior. Topics includes planning, organizing, leadership, and control. Interrelationships among needs and expectations of the individual, the organization, and society are examined.
  • Entrepreneurship & Innovation
    • This course provides students from all disciplines a knowledge and practice of how entrepreneurship works through the identification of opportunities and turning ideas into innovations in order to create value for society.
  • Sustainability & Innovation 
    • This course provides students with an understanding of the complex dynamics underlying sustainable business as a global phenomenon. Sustainable business is about using entrepreneurial skills to craft innovative responses to wicked problems. Students will study how organizations and entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, combine and mobilize resources, trigger positive organizational and systemic change, and build sustainability.
  • Entrepreneurship Practicum
    • This course is centered on experiential learning in the field. Students work on consulting projects, feasibility studies, internships and other projects that interface with the entrepreneurial community.
  • Ethical & Social Responsibility of Business
    • Basic concepts of ethics as typically referred to in western civilization and a testing of the basic hypotheses of the concepts. Through formal lecturing, case studies, dialogue, and with the possible help of guest lecturers, working premises, assumptions and principles regarding business ethics are analyzed.
  • Human Behavior in Organizations
    • Study of the organization (for profit and non-profit) as a complex system: line and staff functions, administration/leadership styles, motivation and group dynamics - and impact of each on the achievement of organization goals. Special emphasis on organization communication.
