Student Health Insurance

SAU doesn't require proof of health insurance for domestic students and we do not provide health insurance to our students.

For uninsured or underinsured students, families should find an individual health insurance carrier that provides coverage to health care providers in Iowa.

Please note:

• Most students are covered until age 26 under their parents' health insurance plans. Your health insurance provider will contact you in advance to remind you when your student is turning 26 and will no longer be covered under the current policy. If your student is a full-time, single student at an accredited institution of higher learning after age 26, check with your carrier to determine if he/she can remain on your policy. If not, your student may be eligible to enroll in the same policy with your carrier as an independent within 60 days of their birthday. If this option is cost-prohibitive, parents are encouraged to search for other health insurance providers. You can ask your carrier for assistance or go online and search Health Insurance Marketplace or Cobra Health Insurance for plans, cost, and sign-up if the institution he/she is attending does not offer health insurance for students. There are annual periods of open enrollment with all carriers but start your search early so your student is covered under a policy.

• Certain academic programs have coverage requirements for off-site learning experiences.

• Students from outside Iowa who use Medicaid can apply for Medicaid in Iowa while enrolled in school. Iowa will pay for claims during the month of application. Please call Student Health Services or Community Health Care at 563-336-3202 with questions.
