Join us for a Question & Answer with artist Kristine Heykants as she discusses the exhibit, "Work Ethic: Women in Rural Iowa."

Kristine Heykants:

These photographs are from "Uprooted," a long-term documentary project about the rural farming community of Belmond, Iowa (population 2,300), where my father grew up on a small family farm. Arising from a desire to reconnect with extended family and to reacquaint myself with the town, "Uprooted" ultimately progressed into a seven-year inquiry that brings into focus the parallels and contrasts between past and present.

Through a collection of portraits, scenes and landscapes, I portray Belmond at this singular moment in the early 21st century. My portraits counter the gap in our collective awareness of lives of rural Midwestern women, conveying in a straightforward and unromanticized manner the roles played by women in the town.
