Zachary Carlisle, PhD

Zachary T. Carlisle, PhD is a professor of Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences. Carlisle is the author of N/A. With a PhD in Sociology from Oklahoma State University, Carlisle has research interests in men's experiences with sexual violence, as well as sexual violence in carceral spaces, and the 'glass cliff' phenomenon amongst NCAA coaches. Dr. Carlisle teaches Introduction to Sociology and Sociological Theory courses. Dr. Carlisle's research and teaching interests focus on the following sociological areas: Sexual Violence, Gender, Sexualities, Stratification, Research Methods, Youth and Homelessness, Health Inequalities, Sociological Theory, Sport and Social Psychology.

Courses Taught

Introduction to Sociology

Scientific description of the regularities and patterns of behavior that characterize our society and the larger global environment. Sociological analyses of the social forces that affect our daily lives. An overview of the field. The course provides training in a sociological perspective that demonstrates the importance of social structures (e.g., organizations and institutions) as determinants of human behavior. By systematic empirical investigation of social structures, students gain knowledge that can lead to greater control of such structures and of their lives. By learning to see the relationships between people and among groups of people, you will enhance your impact on society.

Sex & Gender

Introduces students to major sociological perspectives on sex and gender. Topics include socialization, intellectual and personal development of women and men, theories of gender inequality, and analysis of the major social institutions organizing gender relations, such as the family, economy, and politics.

Sociological & Criminological Theory

Examines the background, assumptions, and ideas of early sociologists and criminologists as they tried to establish a foundation for sociology and criminology as academic disciplines. Prerequisites: CRJU 101 or SOC 101.

Sociology and Criminal Justice Seminar

Capstone seminar focusing on the application of social science methods and theory to current issues in sociology and criminal justice.
