David O'Connell, DBA

David O'Connell, DBA is a professor of Managerial Studies in the College of Business. O'Connell is the author of Measuring the Dynamics of Grace at Work, Journal Of Positive Psychology. (2024). With a Doctorate in Business A from Boston University, O'Connell has research interests in applied faith at work and the effects of gracious behavior in fostering positive work climates. Dr. David O'Connell is a Professor in the Department of Management. A member of the faculty since 1998, he has taught courses in leadership, organization theory, conflict and negotiation, human resource management, case research, principles of management, and research methods. Dr. O'Connell served as the Dean of the College of Business at St. Ambrose University from 2010-2014. Dr. O'Connell was named Outstanding Graduate Professor at the University in 2011 and received the Faculty Teaching Award in the College of Business in 2020.

Dr. O'Connell has published articles in the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, Group & Organization Management, Leadership and Organizational Development Journal, People & Strategy, the CASE Journal, Organization and Management Journal, and the Journal of Management Education. His research and writing have focused on organizational vision, team development, leadership development, personal adaptability, grace in the workplace, and management pedagogy. Dr. O'Connell has served on the Board of Directors for the Midwest Academy of Management, where he has been an active member for several years. He has also worked with a number of organizations in a consulting or training capacity.

Prior to pursuing his doctoral studies, Dr. O'Connell served the Public Service Company of New Mexico in communications and research capacities. While a graduate student at Boston University he worked with the Executive Development Roundtable, the Human Resources Policy Institute, and the Boston University School of Public Health.

  • Principles of Management
    • Survey of topics from several social science disciplines applied to the study of effective management and organizational strategy, structure and behavior. Topics includes planning, organizing, leadership, and control. Interrelationships among needs and expectations of the individual, the organization, and society are examined.
  • Leadership Work Action Project
    • This course explores leadership in organizations, including historical and current research. This writing-intensive course connects leadership theory and practice.
  • Organizational Theory and Behavior
    • Concentrates on individual processes, inter-personal and group processes, organizational processes and design and organizational changes.
  • Human Behavior in Organizations
    • Study of the organization (for profit and non-profit) as a complex system: line and staff functions, administration/leadership styles, motivation and group dynamics - and impact of each on the achievement of organization goals. Special emphasis on organization communication.
  • Ethical and Social Responsibility of Business 
    • Basic concepts of ethics as typically referred to in western civilization and a testing of the basic hypotheses of the concepts. Through formal lecturing, case studies, dialogue, and with the possible help of guest lecturers, working premises, assumptions and principles regarding business ethics are analyzed.
  • Collegiate Teaching
    • In this special topics course, students learn and practice the fundamentals in course design, assessment, and pedagogy appropriate for teaching business.
